(Annual) (Ocimum basilicum) An compact version improved ‘Genovese classico’ variety developed in Italy for the pesto industry. The main breeding goals were to improve uniformity and to reduce the unwelcome mintiness often found in Genovese basils. Plants are relatively compact with large, brilliant dark green leaves of intense scent and flavour about 24” high and suitable for container or garden growing. Deadheading basil regularly will ensure a continuous supply throughout the season- when deadheading save the flowers for flavouring oil or vinegar.
Basil likes warm weather and will die if it even thinks about frost, (actually 5 degrees C is about as low as it can stand) so make sure you harvest for pesto early to be safe.
